May 2024, China performed gene-edited pig liver transplant on 71-year-old patient. Patient had severe liver failure from hepatitis B and cancer. Pig liver transplanted after tumor removal and immunosuppressive treatment. Pig liver produced bile and coagulation factors for a month. Complication caused liver removal: xenotransplantation-associated thrombotic microangiopathy. Patient survived 171 days post-procedure
