Former Refugee Barham Salih Takes Over UNHCR Role

United Nations General Assembly elected Barham Salih as United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees head by consensus.
Salih, 65, Kurdish politician, will lead UNHCR from Jan 1, 2024.
He succeeds Filippo Grandi.
Salih fled Saddam Hussein's regime as a refugee.
His leadership is based on empathy, pragmatism, and international law.
