Hundreds of low-income parents in Georgia filed a lawsuit The lawsuit names the Division of Family and Children Services and the Georgia Department of Human Services as defendants State child welfare agencies charged impoverished families despite knowing their circumstances Plaintiffs allege children were removed for housing instability Families were billed for foster-care child support Annalinda Martinez paid $100 monthly until fall 2019 She was ordered to pay $472 despite living below poverty Martinez eventually relinquished parental rights for her six daughters The lawsuit seeks to stop seeking child support for aged-out or adopted children The lawsuit seeks compensation for improper payments A spokesperson for the Georgia Department of Human Services said the state has not been served Federal government guidance in 2022 urged limits on seeking child support Georgia’s 2024 rule change is not retroactive.
