ETH Zurich team published study in Nature Climate Change. 2.7°C warming causes 3,000 glaciers to vanish yearly (2040-2060). World on track for 2.7°C warming with 2,000 annual glacier loss by 2041. Satellite data on 211,490 glaciers defined extinction as <0.01 km² or <1% volume. Local communities face water and tourism losses from glacier loss. Over half of small glaciers in Alps, Andes, North Asia will disappear in 20 years. 4°C scenario leads to 4,000 glacier losses/year by mid-century (20% remaining vs 50% at 1.5°C)
