Merseyside police helicopter chased suspect at low altitude, no action taken

A police helicopter that flew very low over the ground during a chase in Merseyside will not face disciplinary action after an investigation concluded. The aircraft, used to track a suspect on a motorbike near Carr Mill Dam in St Helens on August 13, was filmed flying so low that it disappeared behind trees. The chase ended with one suspect arrested for multiple offenses, including dangerous driving and theft, while a second suspect was detained for theft and assisting an offender. Police helicopter crews typically maintain a minimum altitude of 60 meters, but they are allowed to descend during pursuits. The National Police Air Service (NPAS) confirmed the crew followed safety procedures and conducted a dynamic risk assessment. Ch Supt Fiona Gaffney stated the operation was a legitimate policing task to support public safety. The UK Civil Aviation Authority will review the incident but has confirmed awareness of the event.
