Mississippi author Greg Iles passes away following decades-long cancer struggle
Greg Iles, author of the 'Natchez Burning' trilogy, died at 65 after a decades-long battle with multiple myeloma, a blood cancer. Born in Germany, Iles moved to Natchez, Mississippi, at age three and developed a deep connection with the region. His works, including the 'Natchez Burning' trilogy, explore race and class in the 1960s Jim Crow South. Iles was initially diagnosed with multiple myeloma in 1996 but kept his illness private until publishing his final novel, 'Southern Man' in 2024. He also experienced health challenges, including a ruptured aorta and partial leg amputation in 2011, which he recovered from. Iles performed with The Rock Bottom Remainders musical group alongside authors like Stephen King and Amy Tan.
