NATO Adjusts Forces in Eastern Europe

Romania's defense ministry announced U.S. reducing troop numbers and ending rotation of a U.S. Army brigade in the Black Sea region.
U.S. policy changes driven by new priorities have led to resizing forces since February, with NATO's eastern flank presence enabling posture adjustments.
The Pentagon's plan involves around 1,000 U.S. troops, with the 101st Airborne Division's 2nd Brigade nearing a nine-month deployment not being backfilled.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said European NATO allies must take larger security roles.
Rotations began after Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine to reassure allies and deter Moscow.
Estonian Defense Minister Hanno Pevkur noted uncertainty about other European countries being affected.
