New Study Shows Success in CAR T-Cell Treatment for T-ALL

BE-CAR7 from University College London and Great Ormond Street Hospital achieved 82% deep remissions in nine children and two adults with T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia.
The trial targeted patients with T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia who had not responded to standard treatments.
Scientists modified donor T-cells with three base edits to disable self-targeting, remove the Cluster of Differentiation 7 marker, and make them resistant, creating universal CAR T-cells.
Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity will support treatment for 10 more patients.
Alyssa Tapley, the first patient, has been discharged to long-term follow-up and returned to school.
The phase 1 trial is preliminary, with concerns about Cluster of Differentiation 7 loss increasing infection risks and long-term transplant effects.
