Hamas has proposed a ceasefire plan nearly identical to one by US envoy Steve Witkoff, with a 60-day truce and the return of 28 hostages, including 10 still alive, to Israel 22 months after the October 7 attacks. The plan also includes releasing 200 Palestinian prisoners and unspecified numbers of women and minors. Israel demands all 50 hostages be freed. Over 62,000 Palestinians have died in Gaza since October 2023, with 251 fatalities from famine and malnutrition, including 108 children. Israel controls 75% of Gaza and has been advancing militarily, causing ongoing casualties. The Gaza health ministry reports widespread destruction and a humanitarian crisis.
