Short-Form Chinese Dramas Gain Popularity in U.S. via Fast-Paced Storytelling

U.S. television series are producing longer episodes, while Chinese minidramas—short, vertical videos under two minutes each—gaining American fans by offering quick, soap opera-style stories with romance, revenge, and cliffhangers. Known as duanju in Chinese, these dramas focus on wealthy characters with secret identities, such as vampires or billionaires, often starring American actors. Originating in China, the genre has 600 million users and generated $6.9 billion in revenue last year. Companies like ReelShort, DramaBox, and GoodShort distribute these shows in the U.S., with platforms adapting content for American tastes. Minidramas cost less to produce and rely on user purchases and ads for revenue. Despite using Chinese locations for authenticity, they prioritize American actors and screenwriters to appeal to U.S. audiences. The genre's success hinges on tight storytelling, frequent cliffhangers, and fast-paced content that delivers quick emotional engagement.
