Smiley Cartoon Bean App Challenges Doomscrolling Habits

Hank Green, a prominent online creator known for educational videos and the Vlogbrothers channel, developed Focus Friend, a productivity app that uses a smiley cartoon bean to encourage focus. The app sets timers for tasks, blocks distractions like social media, and rewards users with knitting projects for the bean. If users stay focused, the bean completes knitting projects; if they get distracted, the bean drops knitting needles. The app has reached No. 1 on Apple’s free apps chart with over 100,000 downloads on Google Play. Focus Friend aims to reduce "doomscrolling" (excessive online scrolling) by providing a fun, gamified approach to screen time management, similar to the Tamagotchi game. Green and developer Bria Sullivan, founder of Honey B Games, created it as a "passion project" to help users focus without ads. The app has gained popularity since launching in July, with users like Hannah Rae reporting improved focus and reduced phone use.
