UK Struggles with Post-16 Math Proficiency Despite High A-Level Popularity
Maths is the most popular A-level subject in the UK, but concerns persist about the mathematical skills of students who do not continue studying it after 16. Despite this, core maths qualifications have seen a 20% increase in entries from 12,810 in 2024 to 15,327 in 2025. However, fewer than 10% of non-math A-level students have taken core maths, indicating significant underutilization. The Royal Society's 2024 report highlights the need for reforms to improve mathematical and data skills until age 18, including compulsory education and better university incentives for core maths.
