US official confirms killing of top IS figure in Syria raid

A US official said US forces conducted a pre-dawn raid in northern Syria that killed a senior Islamic State group member, who was considered a potential leader of the group in Syria. The target was an Iraqi national married to a French national, according to Syrian sources. The operation, which began around 2am in Idlib province, involved US troops with air support from helicopters and drones. This was the second known US military raid in northern Syria since Bashar al-Assad's ousting in December. US forces previously targeted and killed IS leaders in the region in 2019 and 2022.
