Far-Right Gains in Portugal's Election

António José Seguro won Portugal's presidential election on Feb 8, defeating André Ventura.
Seguro is seen as a mediator and defender of democratic values.
He received support from conservatives.
Exit polls showed Seguro at 67-73% and Ventura at 27-33%.
Portugal's president can dissolve parliament and block legislation.
Seguro will succeed Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa in March.
Prime Minister Luís Montenegro did not endorse either candidate.
Ventura's 34% vote is up from Chega's 22.8% in last year's election.
This is the first extreme-right run-off in Portugal and Europe.
