Pope Leo XIV appointed Gabriele Giordano Caccia as apostolic nuncio to the U.S.
Cardinal Christophe Pierre is retiring at 80.
Caccia has experience as Holy See's UN observer since 2019, former nuncio to Lebanon and Philippines.
Caccia was born in Milan on Feb 24, 1958.
U.S. bishops welcomed Caccia with warmth and prayerful support.
Caccia's UN background signals Vatican support for multilateral diplomacy.
