State Halts New Data Centers Temporarily

Maine Legislature passed Legislative Draft 307 to halt permits for new data centers of at least 20 megawatts until November 2027.
The bill was sent to Governor Janet Mills for approval.
A 13-member Data Center Coordination Council will study electricity, grid reliability, and water impacts by February 2027.
Rep. Melanie Sachs called the bill a 'thoughtful pause,' while Developer McDonald said it would kill his $550 million project.
Legislative Draft 713 bars new data centers from tax incentives after July and requires a study by November 4.
Maine is leading in data center regulation with 11 other states considering similar laws.
